From Quick Win to Big Wins

East Oakland Innovators

The EOIs, Youth UpRising, and Castlemont Community Market are joining forces to host a Clean Up the Block Party. On Saturday August 2, 11am-3pm, join us at Youth UpRising for games, music, and fun for the whole family!

  • Play games, like the Trash Toss, where you earn points for sorting garbage into compost, recycling, and trash bins.
  • Learn to grow your own herb or flower garden by reusing egg and beverage cartons as planters.
  • Get free resources for keeping Castlemont clean and beautiful.

This Block Party is the resulting Quick Win for our project on trash and dumping. (A Quick Win is an improvement that is visible, has immediate benefit, and can be implemented quickly.) A dual purpose of the Quick Win project was to provide an action-oriented way to learn design thinking. For the past six weeks, the EOIs have been learning how to Understand, Ideate, and Experiment using design thinking methods.

As we wrap up the Quick Win, we will be a launching our Big Win projects to address priorities identified by Castlemont residents. For the next five months, we’ll be working on projects in the areas of public safety, community building, education, or local economy. In order to address these larger, more complex issues, we’re expanding our cohort from six to ten.

This also marks a great transition for the EOIs. Shifting from learning to leading, the EOIs are taking the wheel as drivers of positive change.

Congratulations, EOIs!

Stay tuned as we form teams to tackle tough challenges.
